Insurance premiums rise with Budget

June 23rd, 2010 flexluthor No comments

Chancellor, George Osborne, announced in the 2010 budget rises in Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) which affects car home and travel insurance.

From 4 January next year people will pay 6% tax (currently 5% included in overall price). The increase translates to an average £18 a year in tax on a typical £300 car insurnace premium.

Young drivers who pay much higher premiums will be hit hardest. This comes at a time when drivers have already been hit by hikes in the price of their premiums –as much as 20 percent in the last 12 months.

Eric Galbraith, chief executive of the  BIBA commented “Biba’s research last year demonstrated that businesses and consumers were reducing insurance cover as a result of the recession, and we are concerned that increases to insurance premiums as a result of IPT could lead to even further underinsurance or even a lack of insurance protection. The last thing people need in a financial crisis is a higher insurance bill,” he said.

History of IPT

Introduced in 1994 at a flat rate of 2.5%.

It was increased on general insurance products to 4% in 1997

Increased to 5% two years later.

Increased by Conservative-Liberal democrat government to 6%

CompareChecker views the increase in IPT along with the increase in premiums made by insurers, admittedly to cover underwriting losses, to be yet more incentive for consumers to compare car insurance on the major comparison sites to get the best cover at the best price for them.

Women’s insurance concerns about lock and keys cover.

June 18th, 2010 flexluthor No comments

Researched commissioned by Defaqto recently found that women are far more concerned about their policies covering the cost of replacement of car door locks.

Mike Powell of Defaqto comments: “Replacing the locks of the vehicle if the keys were lost or stolen is seen as one of the most important cover elements for women, but for men, the survey highlighted that this cover feature was far less significant.

It appears that the feature is of more complexity than men, who generally give it far less significance, consider it to be with Mr. Powell breaking it down further

“Where cover is given, most policies will pay for the costs of replacing the locks, subject to any policy limit. Other policies also include cover for the costs of replacing the vehicles lock transmitter and central locking interface, and the affected parts of the alarm and/or immobiliser.”

Mr Powell echoed the sentiments of other advisors in his conclusion that drivers needed to review the wording in their policies as cover was usually  “subject to the policyholder being able to establish that the identity or garaging address of their car is known to any person who is in possession of the ignition keys.”

The Youtube model for innovation

The YouTube Innovation Model

The YouTube Innovation Model

Call me a cynic but I have my own theories on Youtube. If they are not original fair enough and If they are just ridiculous that is fine but I want to share them here anyway.

Youtube was founded February 2005. I won’t patronise anybody by describing what it is.

Solve a problem: Online video sharing

Prior to its unveiling there was no common, cross platform solution for easily sharing video online. Yes it was a good solution. But…

Pictures: Yes Video: No

Who really shares their own generated videos regularly? This may sound ridiculous due to the massive success and countless number of channels on YouTube. However look at Facebook. How many pictures are you tagged in? Now, how many videos are you tagged in? No comparison.

Exactly. My first experience of YouTube was as a first year student in college/university (Spring 2006). My reason? A friend wanted to show me a new music video. Even though the general quality of video back then was terrible I used the site regularly from that day onward.

How often do we use YouTube for the sole purpose of watching copyrighted material that we either missed or want to see again but the media company do not offer to broadcast it anywhere?

Obtaining the content: Licensing Vs. Digital Millennium Copyright Act

Licensing this content would be either impossible or impossibly expensive.

YouTube’s bread and butter was and still is the wealth of copyrighted material that its users uploaded by the minute to the site. This is really what brings the users to the site.

Material that they felt they could argue they were not responsible for and so immune to prosecution under the provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

The importance of Duplicate Videos

If we look at a popular user generated site such as Digg.com we see that they make an effort to prevent duplicate entries. YouTube does not do this, with pages of entries with the same video title.

The beauty of this being the fact that duplicate videos allow copyrighted material to remain on the site as the copyright holder has to issue a request for each slightly different iteration to be taken down (this may be a slightly over simplified version of events but I believe it in essence to be true).

The result

The world’s largest TV network offering the largest library of international video clips under the guise of a video version of Flickr!

What does CompareChecker take from this?

1 Solve a problem: The necessity to review quotes from multiple price comparison sites

2 Obtaining the content: The quote information is copyrighted material. Republishing it on CompareChecker would be a flagrant copyright infringement. Extend and legitimise the YouTube concept by making the act of obtaining quotes a user-generated exercise.

3 The result: CompareChecker  -A legitimate solution that does not infringement copyright law.

Is Deep Linking Illegal?

June 4th, 2009 flexluthor No comments

I am a regular user of sites like Digg, where deep linking is everything. I have this blog to document my progress launching the first comparison site for comparison sites in the UK.

I have a very, very short directory of uk personal finance price comparison sites up at www.CompareCompare.it  (this site is only registered until August 2009 I won’t be re-registering it after that so you will not be able to follow the link after that) and recently I received a cease and desist from a company over the description and link to their web site.

It may seem even more ridiculous that I was an affiliate of this company, but should that even matter? Read more…

Online Marketing

It’s easy to think that you just need to get a good idea (check) and market it (check) then you have a success. But wait a minute. That marketing bit isn’t necessarily the light switch you want it to be. It can be quite hard to actually get people to know about a project. Read more…
