Over 50s are enjoying driving gadgets, advised to check insurance policies

June 18th, 2010 starkwayne No comments

The over 50s often seen as avoiding hi-tech aids appear to be adopting them in great numbers.

Although it must be noted that they are the most responsible when it comes to using hand-held devices when driving (12 % compared with 33% of 18-34 year olds –the worst offenders)

The insurer, Saga,  feels that in this age bracket 31% of drivers are finding hands-free aids a distraction. This brings cause for concerned when paired with the findings released by Saga that 32% of over-50s use sat nav systems and a further 20% use cruise control systems whilst driving.
In addition Andrew Goodsell, of Saga, commented: “Installing high-tech gadgets, or leaving personal possessions such as mobiles and laptops in the car is an attraction to thieves, so we are urging people to make sure they keep high value items out of sight and to check they have adequate insurance cover,”  so there is a great need for car insurance.

Price comparison sites: Simple is the new cheap

Innovation is the biggest advantage in the price comparison sector (innovation and huge marketing budgets!). A little innovation is plugged with tens of millions of pounds in the next marketing campaign.

A major innovation is a “game changer”. Find that and you can dominate your industry. It appears that the price comparison industry is seriously lacking in real innovation – a meerkat is the biggest product innovation since the launch of such sites a decade ago. Read more…

A few figures from a new Which? Money report

  • 1 in 4 find better value financial products elsewhere. With 12% stating they were unhappy with the quotes delivered for them.
  • More than half went direct to purchase the product after using the comparison site.
  • Only 3 out of 10 trust comparison sites.
  • Two thirds believe results are listed based on the commission they make the comparison sites.
  • No comparison site scored higher than 50% in customer satisfaction. Read more…

MobilePhoneExpert: boasts quality Vs quantity in comparison shopping results?

November 13th, 2009 ademolajo No comments

Ade Molajo is a graduate turned entrepreneur most widely known for widely his opposed attempts to launch the first price checker for comparison sites, comparechecker.com.

The Mobile Phone Expert was launched yesterday by Richweb Media, which is behind the Broadband Expert comparison site.

The site aims to serve up fewer results in a bid to return more relevant lists of phones and tariffs on the major networks as well as in retailers like carphonewarehouse, based on a user’s preferences, along with advice from MobilePhoneExpert. Read more…

Google comparison ads: A threat to moneysupermarket?

November 13th, 2009 ademolajo No comments

Ade Molajo is a graduate turned entrepreneur most widely known for widely his opposed attempts to launch the first price checker for comparison sites, comparechecker.com.

Is this a real threat?

Google’s impending entry to the price comparison market has been rumored for over a year, I even used it as an argument for the benefit of a comparison site price checker when I was trying to get comparison sites to agree to CompareChecker.

Google recently launched Adwords comparison ads that in their words “lets users compare multiple, relevant offers more easily.” Read more…

Coming to your home October 22?

It’s launch day for windows 7. I’ve been eagerly awaiting this day since my laptop (Sony VAIO FZ with serious heat, battery and now turning on issues) died about 4 weeks ago.

With all the fan fare surrounding this release I figured launch day would be ripe with offerings. Read more…

Product review: InfixPro PDF Editor

September 21st, 2009 starkwayne No comments

My dad recently came to me annoyed that the program he bought (a DTP program called PagePlus) which the salesperson had told him could edit PDF files could only save in the format.

I got on the case to find a suitable product. Adobe’s own Acrobat is particularly expensive and so I would advise users to familiarise themselves with the number of third party editors available in the $100 (£60-£70) price range.

There are a lot of products out there and having used a plethora of fully-working free trials my favourites are NitroPDF and InfixPDF Pro.

Users of the Microsoft Office Suite 2007 will be familiar with the layout of NitroPDF offering; however, it was really Infix that shone.

I loved the ease with which graphics, text etc could be added, moved around and edited.

The products both offer similar features (Insert, extract, delete, resize, rotate pages etc.) however I really found the controls of InfixPro PDF to be more intuitive.

The functionality of Infix beat NitroPDF and given that they are both similarly priced I would go for InfixPDF.

My pick: InfixPro PDF editor

Dragon’s Den…

Dragon’s Den…

I love and loathe this show. I know (or at least hope) these guys (Dragons) aren’t really this pompous or full of themselves.

a la Simon Cowell

Peter Jones is somewhat of a paradox to me. He fronts this national enterprise academy (which i think is awesome), but then stars on random tv shows (American inventor), pushes trolleys in dubious adverts (he’s no Meerkat!), laughs in the face and berates wannabe entrepreneurs and then when he finds an idea worth running with (if I’m fair –so do the rest of them) demands both gratitude and 40 per cent non-negotiable.

I just don’t know what to think of these guys.

Angel Investors or Venture capitalists?

Admittedly if you end up on this show and you are genuinely not there just for the publicity and exposure it probably means your business lacks substance and you haven’t a hope of getting capital any other way… i.e. the idea businesses where its more idea than business. But why then do they act like VCs rather than the angel investors they really are. If you want 40%+ of a business for £50k what are you expecting?

Reality TV or Pantomine?

The inner cynic in me questions some of the supposed entrepreneurs looking for capital.

Recently Sharon Wright was on the show. She was phenomenal. What hadn’t she done (invented magnamole magnetic cabling tool), achieved (orders from BT), thought of (the next stage product to retrieve the first tool) etc.

I feel like this woman was this season’s Leona Lewis.  She didn’t appear to need the show because her talents were so great and obvious. All being on the show achieved was celebrity backing and exposure the average joe companies up and down the country (and they say the BBC doesn’t do advertising lol).

Love/hate relationship

I love the show. I love how smug these “Dragons” are. I’ll continue watching because it’s just that kind of show.

In closing… imagine if they pitched twitter to these guys

Idea: Facebook statuses without the Facebook.
Revenue: No revenue… don’t worry we’ll figure that out in a few years
Looking for: $55m in exchange for 22%

Any Questions?…
